2008 ESPY Awards Rock Los Angeles

The Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, California was brimming over with celebrity presence as ESPN held their annual ESPY Awards last night (they’ll air this Sunday at 9pm).

And who better than the “SexyBack” man himself, Justin Timberlake (who also performed a Rock Opera montage onstage), to host the night, with multiple wins by Tiger Woods, including Male Athlete of the Year, Best Golfer, and Best Championship Performance.

Unfortunately, Mr. Woods is still at home in Florida recuperating from his knee surgery, which has caused him to miss the British Open, as well as the rest of the PGA Season. Not to fear, though, as Will Ferrell happily accepted an award on Tiger’s behalf.

SuperBowl Champions the New York Giants tied Woods in three other categories - Best Game, Best Upset, and Best Play, while University of Tennessee’s Candace Parker garnered Female Athlete of the Year and Female College Athlete trophies.

Parker confessed her nerves at accepting the award from presenter David Beckham. “I’m just excited I got to meet David Beckham. I grew up playing soccer, so I love David Beckham. I was thinking, `Don’t trip, don’t trip.’ He’s truly an inspiration.”

It’s been a great summer for Zac Efron, having just returned from a romantic vacation with his girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens. And last night, he was living it up at the 2008 ESPY Awards.

Ronaldo was looking slick, as always, sporting a khaki jacket and matching trousers with a white shirt, white belt, and white shoes- quite the two-tone ensemble.

Also in the house for a little post-ESPY action were Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo, both looking extremely sexy in their black ensembles.

They’ve been living in America for a little over a year now, and David and Victoria Beckham have definitely made a niche for themselves in the US celebrity culture.

Last night, Posh and Becks showed up on the red carpet outside the Nokia Theatre for the 2008 ESPY Awards, bringing their own brand of sexy along with them.

David looked amazing in a studly dark suit and tie, while his bride went a little more wild with a bright yellow sleeveless dress teamed with a pair of black high heels and black sunglasses.

During the awards show, the LA Galaxy hunk was the target of some harmless pokes from host Justin Timberlake. From the stage, the SexyBack singer announced, “Dude, I got to give you props. Single-handedly you made soccer in America this much more popular,” holding his thumb and index finger an inch apart. “I call it soccer because in America we already have a game dudes play called football.”

Emmy Nominations Announced

It’s that time of year again- time to gear up for the Primetime Emmy Awards. And with this year’s list of nominees, it’s sure to be an amazing night.

When you’re dating a fierce competitor like Lance Armstrong, you have to always bring your A-game. And Kate Hudson knows what it takes to win.

The “Fool’s Gold” actress was spotted getting lessons from her tennis coach in Brentwood, California yesterday to give her the edge over her beau the next time they’re on the court.

Miss Hudson sported a black Nike tennis skirt along with a loose-fitting white tank top as she scoured the clay with her newly-learned moves. And it sounds like tennis isn’t the only new frontier Kate’s conquering.

According to a report, she’ll be joining the cas of Rob Marshall’s musical “Nine” in which she’ll be singing and dancing, an area of her talent we’ve really yet to see.

In fact, she was so impressive at the audition, Marshall says he created the role, which wasn’t in the original Broadway show. “[Hudson’s] revelatory skills as a singer and a dancer lead to the creation of the role,” he told press.

Spotted again earlier today in the City of Lights, Shakira looks as though she’s taken well to the French capital as she chatted on her mobile phone while doing a little sightseeing.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” songstress looked cute and casual in a purple v-neck sweater along with a pair of figure-flattering jeans and black platform heels.

Earlier this week, Shakira had a monumental meeting with former hostage/Columbian political figure Ingrid Betancourt and her son Lorenzo. And it sounds like they’re working together for a good cause.

Both women will be involved this weekend in a worldwide protest against the FARC (the abductors of Betancourt). Ingrid and Columbian pop singer Juanes will head a march in Paris while Shakira holds a concert on the Columbian border with Peru and Brazil.

Konkona Sen Sharma to star in next movie by Sanjay Chel

Konkona Sen Sharma is all set to star in the next movie, ‘Fantastic’, by Sanjay Chel for Percept Picture Company (PPC). Sanjay has a three-picture deal with PPC.

‘Fantastic’ is a romantic-comedy film. The film has a combination of some great actors, namely, Paresh Rawal, Konkona Sen Sharma, Neha Dhupia, Rahul Khanna, and Javed Jaffrey“, says Sanjay Chhel, director of the film.

The most intriguing fact about the film is that Konkona will be paired opposite Paresh Rawal. “Konkona will be playing a role of a typical woman from today’s society and is paired opposite Paresh, that’s not all; she also gets paired opposite Rahul Khanna, who plays a millionaire in the film, and opposite Javed Jaffrey as well. Rahul Khanna will play a highly stylized role as a flamboyant millionaire.

But Sanjay remains secretive about the story of the film, Fantastic.. “Of course you do not expect me to tell you the story now. But I’ll tell you this, it revolves around the society, page 3, lifestyle and such. I have written both the screenplay and lyrics for the songs as well”, says Sanjay

Fantastic is scheduled to go on floors by August end; meanwhile Sanjay Chhel also is waiting with baited breath for Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam, his maiden directorial venture ,which releases on August 22.

Why you must watch The Dark Knight

Carrying the biggest buzz for any film this year, the dark, brooding The Dark Knight, which has an awesome, legend-creating performance by the late Heath Ledger, will light up more than 3,500 theatres in America and Canada, starting Thursday evening. The demand for the tickets is so high that many theatres have added a 6 am show. The film, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, could gross over $100 million by Sunday evening.

It could also become one of the few films this year to have a repeat viewing audience. I would be among them. Having caught the film at a media screening, I am hoping to see at the 6 am show. The thrill of watching it with the audiences is one reason for the repeat visit. And then, I also hope that some of the plot twists that left me confused will become clearer. I also hope I will be able to savour the performances and the complexities of the film's character, as the car chases, mid-air explosions and gut-churning violence will impact me less on the second viewing.

Whether the film will have the wings to soar for several weeks and beat the year's champion until now, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull, is to be seen. The Harrison Ford starrer is heading for a $760 million gross across the world. Even if The Dark Knight, which was made for about $150 million, grosses half of the money made by Crystal Skull, it will be a solid profit-maker for Warner Bros.

Ledger, whose early career was championed by Shekhar Kapur [Images] in the ill-fated Four Feathers, was never a box office star. His most successful film was Brokeback Mountain, which fetched him an Oscar nomination. But that movie grossed a decent $200 million worldwide. Even before his untimely death in January, there was plenty of talk about his career-defining performance as the villain in The Dark Knight.

Now, every major reviewer is praising the actor.

Playing the Joker in the latest Batman saga, Ledger has created such an onscreen persona that his work will go down in the annals of cinema as a singular achievement. 'He comes on screen and electrifies the movie,' declared San Francisco Chronicle. 'With his smeared lipstick and painted white face, he is every clown, who ever terrified a child. His simplicity is fascinating, and as the movie goes on, that simplicity in itself becomes genuinely frightening.'

The Oscar nomination buzz for Ledger has already started. Ask anyone in Hollywood, including veteran producer Ashok Amritraj, and he will tell you that even though there are several months to go, it could be very difficult to find a performance that is as pulsating and frightening as that of Ledger's. Many Hollywood power brokers and journalists are also convinced that Ledger will indeed get the Oscar (in the supporting actor category). Only one star has won an Oscar after death, Peter Finch for 1976's satire Network.

Though the 150-minute long Dark Knight loses energy now and then, on the whole, it is a scary film in which the good guys have to fight hard to slow down if not conquer the Joker.

Director Nolan, 38, who made memorable small films such as Memento about nine years ago, shows here and as in his previous film the 2005 hit, Batman Begins, that he has not lost the ability to tell complex and intriguing stories despite the big budget paraphernalia surrounding his characters.

In the new film, Lieutenant James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and new district attorney Harvey Dent successfully begin to round up the criminals that are menacing New York. But when the mysterious and amoral Joker arrives, Batman feels his services are needed to save the city.

But Batman, like other major characters in the film, has to fight his own demons while confronting the Joker.

While Nolan creates a tense world of conflicting loyalties and good impulses trying to assert over the evil ones, he also makes sure that the story is told with sparkling dialogue.

The Batman asks the Joker: Why do you want to kill me?

'I don't want to kill you,' he answera. 'What would I do without you?'

The Joker also announces at another point in the movie: 'This town deserves a better class of criminal... and I'm gonna give it to them. Tell your men they work for me now. This is my city.'

When one actor offers a mesmerising performance, some of us may not praise the other actors sufficiently. And that should not happen here, as there is hardly any performance that is not interesting. Christian Bale shines particularly in the scenes of conflict; he shows his displeasure and pain when the Assistant DA Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal) for whom he has the hots is distracted by Harvey Dent, the idealistic district attorney (Aaron Eckhart).

Shahid Kapoor has served up an ace. When asked about rumours of a love match with the golden girl of Indian tennis Sania Mirza, the actor says he has nothing to hide about his relationship with her.

Shahid is far from needled about questions related to his personal life. "Sania is my favourite tennis player. I have met her and talked to her. I have nothing to hide about my relationship with her. She can be as good a friend as many other actresses in the film industry. What else can I say?" says Shahid.

Josephine Baker: Honored with stamp

The US Postal Service (USPS) has taken the decision to honor Josephine Baker, the famous chanteuse from African-America, with a stamp of her own. News was revealed on Wednesday. Last year USPS has lost a legal battle after it refused to mail postcards with a topless image of Baker.

Reporters have thrown more light on this news on Josephine Baker. Her image is part of a commemorative series of US postage stamps that has honored classic black cinema. As per schedule the stamp will be unveiled at a ceremony in Newark, New Jersey on Wednesday.

The stamp reproduces a poster from the French film "Princess Tam-Tam" that was released in the year 1935. It featured this sultry star with her bosom covered.

They serve as "invaluable pieces of history, preserving memories of cultural phenomena that otherwise might have been forgotten," added Delores Killette, Vice President of USPS in a statement on Tuesday.

"My adoptive mother, whose theme song was Two loves Have I, my Country and Paris,' would be delighted, thrilled and deeply moved by this wonderful tribute to African-American culture," Baker's adopted son Jean-Claude Baker said in the statement.

After a protracted but eventually triumphant free-speech battle supported by the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), son of Josephine Baker was given the permission in May 2007 to mail as many as fifteen thousand postcards to patrons of "Chez Josephine." It is the name of his restaurant in New York that he has started almost twenty two years ago in honor of his adopted mother.

"My adoptive mother, whose theme song was Two loves Have I, my Country and Paris,' would be delighted, thrilled and deeply moved by this wonderful tribute to African-American culture." This is the comment of Baker's adopted son Jean-Claude Baker.

The USPS had refused to accept and mail the cards, which portrayed a 1926 watercolor painting by Henry Fournier thereby depicting Baker as a topless Follies-Bergere dancer, as "pornographic" item. NYCLU has made this complain.

But the Baker son remained unperturbed. Eventually he earned his right to send the cards and an apology from the USPS.

While interviewing the reporters of a popular news agency Josephine Baker’s son said , "If it had been a photo of Josephine, a black and white photo, there would not have been a case, but it was a work of art, by an artist, and I knew that I had a legal right (to send it by mail) in the United States."

Josephine Baker was born in the year 1906 in St. Louis, Missouri, where she faced discrimination. Even in theaters she was humiliated as blacks were barred from sitting in the same areas as whites.

Details about Natalie Cole’s condition can be known from the statement of the publicist. As per this statement the disease was discovered during a routine examination. It was caused due to use of drugs few years ago.

Fifty eight year old Natalie Cole, the proud daughter of jazz legend Nat King Cole, has had a successful career thereby selling millions of records over the years. She also has planned to release "Still Unforgettable." It is the follow-up of Grammy-winning CD "Unforgettable ... With Love." While many stars have failed to match their international success in the United States, the 23 year old Delta Goodrem has released her U.S. debut album "Delta" on Tuesday.

She is following the footsteps of her role model and fellow Australian Olivia Newton-John.

Delta Goodrem said in an interview, "Olivia's been an incredible guiding light with me. She's always given me really great advice. She's beautiful and we have a beautiful friendship".

Her latest album, Delta, has scored only a handful of US reviews, but she has found a friend in celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who said that her first single "In This Life" was "deelish".

Billboard's Chuck Taylor wrote: "With successes from Leona Lewis, Katy Perry and Natasha Bedingfield proving that the public hungers for quality female pop, timing is a bull's-eye for Goodrem's deliciously tasteful U.S. bid".

Delta Goodrem has performed a duet "Right Here With You" with Newton-John at Los Angeles Gay Pride celebrations in June.

"Delta" is her third studio album and U.S. debut. It was released in Australia last year, hitting No. 1. She described the album as having a "theme of letting go, of moving forward, of believing again in this life".

Delta Goodrem's fiance Brian McFadden, who is an Irish singer has also wrote half of the songs on "Delta".

According to the ruling of judge in the month of May all the financial records pertaining to the Passion's budget and box office will be kept secret. It would be made available only to each side's counsel.

SpiceJet gets Rs 340-cr Ross funding

The US private equity fund house's investment, however, will not trigger an open offer

The board of directors of budget carrier SpiceJet has accepted US-based firm WL Ross' offer to infuse $80 million (Rs 340 crore) in tranches in the cash-strapped airline. The funding was needed by the carrier to stay afloat and fulfill aircraft acquisition commitments. SpiceJet had been looking for a $100 million funding for a while now.

The deal was brokered by Rothschild, the second biggest deal in the Indian aviation space after Air Deccan's acquisition by Kingfisher last year. However, the exact structure of the funding is not made known.

"The deal closing will take another two weeks or so and only after that will the details be made known. But all the regulatory requirements and foreign direct investment guidelines have been met in the structuring of the deal," Amitabh Malhotra, director, Rothschild, said.

There is a cap of 49 per cent for foreign investors in the aviation sector. The deal has been structured in such a way that it will not trigger a open offer, which is mandatory if the stake bought is over 15 per cent in a listed company.

WL Ross, which picks up distressed companies and turns them around, is likely to buy foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCBs) that Goldman Sachs and Dubai-based investor Istithmar, SpiceJet's shareholders, have in an escrow account. The bonds were issued in December 2005. Sources said that it was unlikely that any of the large shareholders in the company would lose any stake.

What swung the deal in favour of Ross, according to bankers close to the deal, was the commitment to the low-cost model.

"Though the external environment is the biggest villain in aviation right now, SpiceJet is one of the most efficiently run airline and is a value proposition. Here is the chance to prove oneself and this gives the fund the exact opportunity to do so," Malhotra said. It is not clear as to how long Ross will stay invested in SpiceJet. , though there are indications that the firm might seek to exit when things brighten up for the sector.

"As a result of this funding, the airline has adequate funding for the short and medium terms and as far as the investors are concerned, there is no preferential lock-in period of one year," said a banker close to the deal.

In a move to consolidate the board, Wilbur Ross, chairman and CEO, WL Ross and Ranjeet Nabha, the company's managing director in India, are expected to join the SpiceJet board of directors, said a company release.

WL Ross, a part of Invesco since October 2006, manages assets for institutional investors in the US, Europe and Asia. This is Ross's second investment in India. Ross acquired suit maker OCM India for $37 million in February 2007.

According to figures from the civil aviation ministry for June, SpiceJet is the second-largest low-cost carrier in India after Simplifly Deccan with a market share of 10.8 per cent. The carrier operates 94 flights a day with its 15-aircraft fleet.

With the normally red carpet turned funeral black in honor of late actor Heath Ledger, the New York City premiere of “The Dark Knight” turned out to be quite the star studded affair.

Held at AMC Loews Lincoln Center on Monday evening (July 14), the movie’s stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman and Maggie Gyllenhaal were joined by Hollywood guests ranging from Blake Lively and Lauren Conrad to Emile Hirsch and Edie Falco.

And with Heath’s role as The Joker receiving rave reviews, the “Brokeback Mountain” actor’s co-stars have had nothing but praise for their fallen friend.

“He was wonderful. He was talented beyond belief,” said Bale, who plays Batman in the movie. “His immersion in the character was a greatly satisfying thing to work opposite.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal, who plays attorney Rachel Dawes in “The Dark Knight”, added: “He did something that is difficult even for every great actor. It’s still very unusual to hit a stride that is so free that you can really do no wrong. There’s no way to judge what he did. He was absolutely free.”

“I would love to be right here with him. And I thought I would be,” Bale added.

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has sparked reports he will join U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's group of advisers - after publicly offering his interest in counseling the potential world leader.

Dog Lovers Select the World's 15 Most Beautiful Dog Breeds

More than 2,200 Online Viewers Selected the Golden Retriever, Siberian Husky, and Yorkshire Terrier as Three of the 15 Most Beautiful Breeds

DAYTON, Ohio, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Gorgeous celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Taye Diggs, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, and even George Clooney will have some unexpected competition for the title of "most beautiful" this Spring. Bangalore second fastest growing city

BANGALORE: The price of progress could get steeper. Teeming cities like Bangalore will have to tread in caution between development and disorder, if a new study by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is any indication. Rapid urbanisation is hampering the economic infrastructure and leaving vital services at risk in Asian cities, the study says.

The report, 'Managing Asian Cities', shows that among Indian cities with 50 lakh or more residents, Bangalore is the second fastest growing in terms of population. Bangalore, with an annual population growth rate of 2.8%, is next only to Delhi (3.5%).

The study projects the population in Bangalore to be 99.2 lakh in 2020, based on the city's population in 2006, before the dawn of Greater Bangalore.

Among Asia-Pacific cities with 50 lakh or more residents, Bangalore stands eighth in terms of rate of population growth. Dhaka, with an annual increase of 3.8%, tops the Asia-Pacific list.

Fergie Gets Ready For Bluesfest

With white snakeskin handbag in arms, Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson made her way to Los Angeles International Airport for a departing flight on Thursday (July 3).

Followed by paparazzi from her house to the LAX security checkpoint, the Black Eyed Peas frontwoman was reportedly catching a flight to Canada as she prepares to perform at the Ottawa Bluesfest on Tuesday (July 8).

The festival, which kicked off yesterday, is in it’s 15th year and is now Ottawa’s largest music festival with more than 200 acts ready to perform.

Press reports tell that the entertainers are divided among six stages each day - with the Black Crowes, James Taylor, the Tragically Hip and Great Big Sea joining Fergie as the main stage headliners.

Shilpa Shetty raises 63,000 pound for charity

Shilpa Shetty who was awarded the Global Diversity award managed to raise 63,000 pounds for charity on the gala night.

The star event of the night was when Shilpa auctioned her kisses for a cool 12, 500 pounds to an admirer.

The actress won the prestigious ‘Global Diversity’ award along with British racing driver Lewis Hamilton for making significant contribution to the public appreciation and understanding of diversity.

She also helped the organizers to raise 63,000 pounds for a charity - the Silver Star Appeal - that runs mobile diabetes assessment units

Stepping in to enthuse the charity auction, the Bollywood actress climbed up to the stage, took the mike and told the audience that the winner would get a “kiss from me”.

But Shilpa was quick to add, “It will be on the cheek. I don’t want my effigies burnt again.”

She was obviously referring to the controversy over the Hollywood star Richard Gere kissing her on stage during an AIDS awareness event in New Delhi in April last year which resulted in some Hindu nationalists burning her effigies and slapping court cases against her and Gere in India.

Her admirer got three kisses on his cheek.
